Vaginal Bacteria Species Can Raise HIV Infection Risk and Undermine Prevention

Science (www.sciencemag.org), July 18, 2016

Jon Cohen

The new findings all come from follow-up studies of women who participated in a PrEP study of a vaginal gel that contained the anti-HIV drug tenofovir. Conducted by the Centre for the AIDS Programme of Research in South Africa (CAPRISA) based in Durban, the trial took place in a region where 66% of 30-year-old women are infected.

Envelope-specific B-cell Populations in African Green Monkeys Chronically Infected with Simian Immunodeficiency Virus.

Nat Common. 2016 Jul 6;7:12131. doi: 10.1038/ncomms12131.

Zhang R, Martinez DR, Nguyen QN, Pollara J, et al.

African green monkeys (AGMs) are natural primate hosts of simian immunodeficiency virus (SIV). Interestingly, features of the envelope-specific antibody responses in SIV-infected AGMs are distinct from that of HIV-infected humans and SIV-infected rhesus monkeys, including gp120-focused responses and rapid development of autologous neutralization.

A Highly Conserved gp120 Inner Domain Residue Modulates Env Conformation and Trimer Stability.

J Virol. 2016 Jul 6. pii: JVI.01068-16. [Epub ahead of print]

Ding S, Tolbert WD, Prévost J, Pacheco B, et al.

Here, we show that W69, located at the interface between the gp120 and the gp41 in the PGT151-bound trimer, plays a critical role in the inter-protomer signaling induced by CD4 binding. This new information might be useful in immunogen design.

Prevalence of Sexually Transmitted Viral and Bacterial Infections in HIV-Positive and HIV-Negative Men Who Have Sex with Men in Toronto.

PLoS One. 2016 Jul 8;11(7):e0158090. doi: 10.1371/journal.pone.0158090.

Remis RS, Lui H, Loutfy MR, Tharao W, et al.

Syphilis and viral infections, including HBV, HCV, HSV-2, CMV, and HR-HPV, were common in this clinic-based population of MSM in Toronto and more frequent among MSM living with HIV. This argues for the implementation of routine screening, vaccine-based prevention, and education programs in this high-risk population.

The objective of our research project is to carry out a comparative study between the infection of myeloid cells and the different subpopulations of CD4 T cells, named naïve, central memory, effector memory, T follicular helper, and terminally differentiated cells, in lymphoid tissues from macaques under antiretroviral therapy, to better understand the mechanisms related to treatment failure and HIV persistence.
