Downtown Winnipeg BIZ: Memo - The latest information for BIZ Members

Results are in - 2023 Midyear Survey
downtown engagement

Thank you to all the members who took the time to provide feedback on the mid-year survey.

Here’s what we heard...

  • Right now, the top concern that members have for downtown is crime/safety.
  • Downtown needs more mental health and addictions resources. Most (68%) put mental health and addictions resources as a top advocacy priority.
  • Attracting more/larger events to downtown is important. It was rated the highest contributor to downtown vibrancy.
  • Members recognize our BIZ teams are hard at work:
    • Street-level services from the Enviro team have a big impact. The top three rated most impactful included litter pick-up (67%), sidewalk cleaning (58%), and cleaning transit shelters (56%).
    • 87% of members have seen our ambassadors out and about providing a friendly and familiar presence downtown.
    • 83% of members believe that we are a strong advocate for their business and for downtown.

Your insights help drive what we do, and we’re dedicated to listening and delivering value to our members. We want to dig deeper and focus on the issues that matter most to you.

This fall, Downtown BIZ is launching the Downtown Speaker Series, a new quarterly event just for members where you’ll hear from experts and decision makers who will share insights and plans to address the issues facing downtown. The Downtown Speaker Series will also give you the opportunity to connect with other downtown businesses and share ideas about how we can make downtown better together.

The first event of the series takes place Sept. 18 when we host Mayor Scott Gillingham to share the City’s plans to improve safety downtown.

Exciting news for Chinatown!

This Fall, the Winnipeg Chinese Cultural and Community Centre will be starting its renovation to add a new captivating public gallery showcasing the historic neighbourhood’s culture. Scheduled to start in September, this transformation is the most significant since the Centre was established 40 years ago.

But that’s not all! Winnipeg Chinatown Night Market will also make its triumphant return this year, with portions of James Avenue and King Street coming alive with food trucks and live performances.
