Downtown Winnipeg BIZ: Memo - The latest information for BIZ Members

Dear Downtown Winnipeg BIZ Member,

City opens applications for 2021 temporary patio program

Today, the City announced it is offering the temporary patio permits program from April 1 – October 31, 2021. The program offers a faster process for businesses to establish temporary patio spaces.

Any business wanting a temporary patio starting April is encouraged to apply now. Winter temporary patio licenses expire on March 31, 2021 and will not carry over into the spring and summer.

More information and application steps are available at winnipeg.ca/temporarypatio .

Reminder that the one-hour complimentary parking and curbside pick-up zones downtown are in place until June 30, 2021.

Extension to federal supports

The federal government announced that they are extending the Canada Emergency Wage Subsidy (CEWS) and the Canada Emergency Rent Subsidy (CERS) to June 5, 2021. Both were originally set to expire March 13, 2021.

CEWS subsidizes a portion of wages for workers who are kept on payroll and CERS provides funds to support a portion of qualifying applicants’ rent. If you meet the criteria, you can apply for both.

For more information on both and to apply, please visit the Government of Canada website. Please reach out to us if you have any questions about the application process. We’re here to help.

DCSP

Downtown Winnipeg BIZ is working with partners to improve safety downtown

We know that safety and wellness remains top of mind for downtown businesses, residents and the city’s most vulnerable. The Downtown Winnipeg BIZ is a key partner of the DCSP (Downtown Community Safety Partnership), a new non-profit organization focused on proactively supporting a healthy, safe and connected downtown where everyone feels safe and welcome.

We’re heard from some members that you haven’t seen the folks in red uniforms walking around downtown in awhile and you’re right. Since our Watch team transitioned to the DCSP, they have a brand new look. But, the teams built at the Downtown Winnipeg BIZ are still supporting downtown safety and outreach as they always have. The Watch team is now called CONNECT, CHAT is now called COAR, and there’s a new team, the Mobile Assist and Connect (MAC247) team providing service 24 hours a day. Look for them in their black jackets and bright green toques!
