Entrepreneurs geared up and ready to accelerate after Pitch'Day

Innovate Manitoba's third annual Pitch'Day drew its largest attendance yet with some 200 students, innovators, investors and business leaders gathered together to cheer on and challenge the 20 startups selected to pitch their business ideas.

At stake was $15,000. Each startup had 2 minutes to convince the panel of judges that their business concept was prize material. The final decision wasn't easy.


Here are your Pitch'Day award winners

First place | $7,500:
Chris Karasewich with Cattle Track: a mobile app for cattle ranchers' log books.

Second place | $2,500:
Matthew Doak with GameChangr: online match-making for gamer coaching.

People's Choice, Best Technology Pitch, and Best Researcher Pitch | $1,000 per award:
Andrea Kraj and Noel Ferrer with Core Renewable Energy Inc.: software that provides customized optimal power strategies.

Best Student Pitch | $1,000:
Pablo Steinberg with N'leashed, collar-training pet control (dog-walking) by smartphone.

Best New Product | $1,000:
Chris Maycher with Home Snowboards: handmade, environmentally friendly snowboards.

Farmers Edge closes major deal with one of the world's largest venture capital firms

TechFutures provides financial assistance, lean startup training, and business counselling to selected young entrepreneurs.

This new program is targeted to entreprenurs between the ages of 18 and 34 that are seeking to commercialize a technology-driven business idea. The first application period is Dec. 1 - 31, 2014. Also, first and second place winners of Ramp Up Weekend (see above) automatically qualify.

Innovation Alley

Innovation Alley nets $300K to fund operations

AssentWorks and Ramp Up Manitoba will get a major boost in operational support from the Province after Monday's announcement. The groups are now jointly called Startup Winnipeg. Mayor Brian Bowman was on hand for the announcement: "What happens here (at Startup Winnipeg) and places like it that support entrepreneurship in Winnipeg are so fundamental to Winnipeg's future," Bowman said.
