Downtown movies are back!
August 22 & 29
downtown movie nights

We’re thrilled to share the long-awaited comeback of outdoor movies downtown, and it’s going to be bigger and better than ever before!

After a hiatus, Downtown Movie Family Night, presented by the WCB, will bring back the magic of outdoor movies to our beloved downtown community.

AUGUST 22: The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part
AUGUST 29: The Super Mario Bros. Movie
TIME: Programming starts at 5:30 p.m., movie begins at 8:15 p.m.

This year’s event will be more than just a movie screening – expect Bonnycastle Park brimming with a party atmosphere, engaging activities and workshops, and delectable treats from Downtown BIZ members and vendors!

For downtown restaurants:
We know how much our movie attendees cherish the experience of enjoying delicious food while watching movies. If you can set up an on-site offering, we would love to hear from you! We are expecting around 200-300 attendees. Please email events@downtownwinnipegbiz.com.

If not, you can still participate:
If you have a takeout offering or a special deal you would like to provide to moviegoers, please share them with us by Friday, Aug 18 to be promoted before the event. Email kristian@downtownwinnipegbiz.com with information.

Let’s make these movie nights unforgettable together!

Downtown revitalization: Main Street & Henry Avenue
Main & Henry

The City is looking to enhance the areas around Amoowigamig, the public washroom on Main Street, by creating a space that fosters a sense of belonging and dignity for all!

The Main Street & Henry Avenue project aims to build on the success of the public washroom by adding planting beds, paving, trees, shrubs, bike racks, and more lighting to improve accessibility and safety. When an area is well-lit and busy with people, it makes the community safer and more inviting.

With support from Winnipeg Foundation, the design will be community-driven in collaboration with Main Street Project and Thunderbird House. The project extends Indigenous teachings and healing opportunities beyond Thunderbird House’s walls, at the heart of the community.

Hyatt Centric Hotel downtown
Hyatt Centric

As tourism experiences an upturn and hotels filled with guests this summer, we’re excited to share the arrival of Hyatt Centric – the first of its kind in Western Canada and the latest addition to our neighbourhood’s accommodations!

The vacant building at 325 Broadway will undergo a $38.6 million transformation and is expected to be completed within three years. Hyatt Centric will have 140 rooms, a full-service restaurant, and a spa. The addition of more high-quality rooms not only promises to accommodate more visitors, but also enhances our ability to host large-scale events that bring life and energy to our city.

Finding unique ways for adaptive reuse of empty buildings downtown is one part of the solution and we’re thrilled to see this investment and the government support and commitment to our downtown.

Livable downtown for everyone
Colony

The more people, the merrier!

A 21-storey tower is soon to be built at 308 Colony Street. This new project is set to create 214 apartment units, 86 of which will be used for affordable housing. It will also include two ground-floor commercial or office spaces, outdoor green space, a terrace, a gym, and a lounge.

Growing our residential population through a mixed-income approach is the key to a more vibrant and inclusive downtown. This affordable housing project on Colony St. not only delivers more housing options downtown but will also increase activity at street-level and improve safety.

Two fantastic new spots are making their way to the heart of the city!

If the aroma of freshly brewed coffee makes your heart skip a beat, you’re in for a treat! Lavanda, downtown’s newest coffee shop, is opening this fall on the ground floor of Smith Street Lofts.

A vibrant makers market is also set to join the downtown scene at The Forks Market! Five maker booths will host small creative business owners each week and offer artisans a place to create, share, and sell their artwork. Their collaborative community hub will also provide a much-needed space where entrepreneurs can offer events, workshops, and activities.
