Holiday Message

Thank you to everyone who joined us at Union Station for our 2023 Annual General Meeting! Your presence made it truly special, and we’re inspired by the support and enthusiasm you bring to our vibrant community. In case you missed it, you can read the 2023 Annual Report on our website.

As this marks the final regular MEMO e-newsletter of the year, I want to express my heartfelt thanks to our community.

In 2023, I hit the five-year mark with Downtown Winnipeg BIZ. It’s been a wild ride, but I couldn’t have done it without the support of our incredible team, both our staff and Board of Directors. I’m grateful for their dedication to this neighbourhood and for approaching their work with passion and joy.

To our BIZ members, thank you! Despite challenges, your commitment to downtown is unwavering. Let’s continue to work together and take steps to show pride in our neighborhood. Share local events with your networks, tidy up your area, or arrange a community clean-up. Reach out if you need ideas on how you can help.

Wishing everyone a warm and safe holiday season!

A historic collaboration

Portage Place Update

On December 12, True North Real Estate Development Limited (TNRED) and the Southern Chiefs’ Organization (SCO) officially formalized their partnership for the redevelopment of Portage Place and Wehwehneh Bahgahkinahgohn (formerly known as the Hudson's Bay Company building).

Why is this important for downtown?

  • Housing – affordable housing units will be added to address the needs in the downtown area and provide options.
  • Healthcare facilities – an enhancement of healthcare services downtown improves quality of life for residents and will increase visitation to the area.
  • Food security – new food services and options offer accessible and diverse food options for everyone.
  • Community space – new hubs for social interaction, events, and community engagement will enhance overall livability of downtown.

Both buildings have been staples in our downtown for decades. We’re pleased to see the collaborative efforts and socio-economic reconciliation happening in our community and among three levels of government.

As we approach the new year, we recognize the significant impact that these initiatives will have on our downtown. We reaffirm our dedication to promoting collaboration, transformation, and reconciliation within our community.
