Update on advocacy for downtown at City Hall
City Hall

Portage and Main

City Council has voted to open Portage and Main for pedestrian crossing starting July 1, 2025. This marks a significant step forward for our downtown community, as more street level activity increases vibrancy and safety downtown.

Our hope is that the city-owned portion of the concourse that connects the underground and skywalk system remains open. Council decided the City will further study decommissioning its portion of the concourse which include looking at next steps, the costs and traffic impacts. The City has also committed to consultation with tenants, property owners and other downtown stakeholders. We recognize closing any portion of the concourse would have a significant impact on Downtown BIZ members in the area. We are here to support businesses and work with the City to find the best solutions and mitigate and negative impacts.

CentreVenture

Council has passed a new mandate for CentreVenture, Winnipeg’s downtown development agency. CentreVenture will be tasked with helping the City, private developers, and nonprofit groups achieve downtown residential housing goals. The organization will also focus on redevelopment plans of the Graham Avenue corridor, a key project outlined in CentrePlan 2050 which is expected to go through Council by the summer.

By working together, we’re one step closer to creating a downtown full of people that drives economic activity.
