Downtown Winnipeg BIZ: Memo - The latest information for BIZ Members

Back Downtown Spirit Week
Spirit Week

Thank you to every one of you who participated in the first Back Downtown Spirit Week! Your creativity, enthusiasm, and unwavering spirit made this week one for the books. We had over 60 workplaces who registered and even more who participated in the activities happening throughout downtown.

These week-long festivities were part of the Back Downtown campaign launched in November 2022. Along with Exchange District BIZ, West End BIZ and other partners, the campaign’s goal was to invite people to come back downtown.

FUN IN THE SUN

Revitalizing the roadmap: Broadway
Broadway Reno

Broadway is getting some tree-mendous new greenery and furniture. These improvements will not only enhance the visual appeal of the street, but also contribute to the health and vibrancy of our neighbourhood.

Centennial Fountain on Broadway

The Centennial Fountain was built to commemorate the centennial anniversary of Manitoba and the 50th anniversary of the first water supplied to Winnipeg from the Shoal Lake Aqueduct. The new landscaping was designed in collaboration with the community of Shoal Lake 40 First Nation.

Official ribbon cutting will be held on Friday, June 9 and open to the public thereafter.

New street furniture is popping up!

Benches, bike racks, and waste receptacles have been installed on the north boulevard. More furniture will be coming after construction on the south boulevard wraps up this Fall.

Turning Over a New Leaf: New Trees on Broadway

More than 70 new trees will be planted over the next two years to protect and revive the Broadway tree canopies. Many of the existing trees have succumbed to environmental stresses and diseases, and this project will protect and revive these canopies for future generations

Pride Parade

Join us in celebrating diversity, inclusivity, and the 2SLGBTQIA (Two-Spirit, Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer and/or Questioning, Intersex, Asexual) at this year’s Pride Parade!

Happening on June 4, the Pride Parade brings people together from all backgrounds and walks of life to show support and solidarity. Downtown Winnipeg BIZ is marching this year and our decorating committee is busy transforming our Kubotas into colourful floats!

Road closures: Memorial Boulevard will be completely closed between Broadway and York Avenue the morning of Sunday, June 4 until 1 p.m.

  • 10 a.m. – Rally at Manitoba Legislative Building
  • 11 a.m. – Parade starting at Memorial Park
    • Northbound on Memorial to Portage Avenue
    • East on Portage Avenue to Main Street
    • South on Main Street to William Stephenson Way, concluding along Waterfront Drive
  • 12 p.m. – Festival at The Forks

We encourage Downtown BIZ members to participate in this joyous downtown celebration. Whether you identify as 2SLGBTQIA+ or as an ally, your support and presence are invaluable in creating a welcoming downtown neighbourhood for everyone.

If your business has special offers during the tail end of Pride Week (June 1 - 4), please send them over to kristian@downtownwinnipegbiz.com.
