Orange Shirt Day & street closures Sept. 30

On Friday, September 30, Wa-Say Healing Centre is hosting the 2nd Annual Orange Shirt Day. The event includes:

  • 10:00AM – Pipe Ceremony at The Forks Oodena Circle

  • 11:00AM – Survivor’s Walk from the Oodena Circle to RBC Convention Centre

  • 1:00PM – Pow Wow inside RBC Convention Centre

The walk is leaving from The Forks heading to RBC Convention Centre at 11:00AM. Due to the large number of projected participants (upwards of 20,000) and a slower-paced walk, the City of Winnipeg anticipates traffic will be impeded for several hours. They also expect a large number of attendees to gather both inside and outside RBC Convention Centre following the walk.

Street closures to be aware of:

  • 11:00AM – 1:00PM Anticipate a full closure of Main Street south of Portage Avenue

  • Drivers can access Memorial/Osborne Street and Main Street south of Broadway to head southbound during that time. Buses will be re-routed while the walk is taking place.

Hawerchuk

The Winnipeg Jets will honour late team legend and Winnipeg Jets Hall of Fame member Dale Hawerchuk with a statue unveiling at True North Square's plaza at the corner of Honourary Dale Hawerchuk Way (Graham Avenue) and Hargrave Street prior to their October 1 pre-season game.

  • 4:30PM-5:30PM – Various activations (bouncy castle, Jets promo teams, DJ, and more)

  • 5:30PM-6:00PM – Unveiling ceremony

Along with the unveiling of the statue, fans are invited to celebrate Hawerchuk's life and legacy at True North Square and the surrounding area before and after the event. The DJ and the Jets community team will remain on site between 6:00PM-7:00PM.

Street closures to be aware of:

  • 4:00PM – 8:00PM Graham will be closed between Donald Street and Carlton Street

  • 4:00PM Hargrave Street will turn into two-way traffic by Portage Avenue and St. Mary’s to accommodate parkade traffic, with the help of Winnipeg Police Service traffic control.

Everyone is welcome to attend a lunchtime learning workshop at Air Canada Park
Air Canada Park

The Downtown Winnipeg BIZ and APTN invite you to a lunchtime learning session in Air Canada Park by the Indigenous Gardens.

  Tuesday, September 27
  12:00PM-1:00PM
The event is BYOL (bring your own lunch).

Elder Dr. Ellen Cook, Language and Knowledge Keeper, will be talking about her work in the revitalization of the Cree language and about her advocacy for northern Indigenous communities impacted by resource extraction and hydro development. Most important to her is the sacredness of the earth and the sustainability of its resources which we have relied on for our survival and sustenance since the beginning of our existence. People need their Indigenous languages because there is a definite link between the vitality of our languages and biodiversity, and the harmonious relationship that was broken between people and the land needs mending.

This event is being facilitated by Indigenous Languages of Manitoba.
