Downtown Winnipeg BIZ: Memo - The latest information for BIZ Members

Dear Downtown Winnipeg BIZ Member,

Welcome to the fifth edition of Downtown Counts, a monthly roundup of downtown activity and what we expect lies ahead.

As always, if you have any questions, contact us at info@downtownwinnipegbiz.com.

Downtown Winnipeg BIZ: Downtown Counts
November 9 – Downtown Counts

For this issue of Downtown Counts, we have new information to share about visitation and spending, thanks to a September Probe Research poll. The results showed more people are returning downtown for work and play and Winnipeggers are choosing downtown for entertainment and dining.

We expect this trend to continue through to the end of the year, especially as more events (including hockey and holiday functions) bring more people – and dollars – downtown.

More downtown workers are back in the office

As of September, 64 per cent of pre-pandemic downtown workers are back in the office, at least part-time. 41 per cent of workers are back working full-time downtown.

Downtown foot traffic increased around SHED

Since we started counting pedestrians in February, we’ve seen the counts consistently increasing throughout most of downtown. The largest changes are near the SHED (Sports, Hospitality and Entertainment District) where we’ve seen the return of hockey, events and concerts to Canada Life Centre and RBC Convention Centre.

On-street parking demand is also up

On-street parking use continues to climb, which is in-line with the overall traffic trends for downtown. In September 2022 the Winnipeg Parking Authority saw a six per cent increase over August 2022.

Aside from April and July, the on-street parking usage has increased steadily month over month.

Winnipeggers are spending more downtown

Spending downtown has increased, bringing more money to downtown restaurants and venues.
