Dear Downtown Winnipeg BIZ Member,
Welcome to the fourth edition of Downtown Counts, a monthly roundup of downtown activity and what we expect lies ahead.
After taking a break over the summer, Downtown Counts returns with the information we’ve collected to help prepare BIZ members for more people returning downtown this fall.
As always, if you have any questions, contact us at info@downtownwinnipegbiz.com.

September 20 – Downtown Counts
As fall arrives, more visitors are returning downtown to work and play. The first week of September, we saw a 15% increase in visitation since the end of July!
Summer saw consistent traffic throughout downtown that followed a similar ebb and flow pattern as seen in July and August in previous years. Winnipeggers took advantage of the beautiful summer weather and were seen on patios, at the Downtown Winnipeg Farmers’ Market, at ManyFest and enjoying downtown parks and greenspaces.
Students are returning to in-person classes at post-secondary intuitions throughout downtown. The University of Winnipeg, RRC Polytech Princess Street Campus, Robertson College, Booth University College, and more institutions all welcomed students to their physical campuses this September.

The Downtown Winnipeg BIZ has recently started using pedestrian counters to give us another way to track downtown activity. We shared the initial data collected in mid-June. Now that we have data from the whole summer, we’re sharing averages from June, July & August. In the next issue, we will start to compare pedestrian trends.

While numbers dropped slightly in July, August saw the return of more on-street parking use.

As fall arrives, we’re excited as more events will continue to bring folks downtown. The Winnipeg Jets start their pre-season with a home game on September 27 and the Manitoba Moose start their season mid-October. In addition to hockey returning, a number of arts, cultural and fun events are on tap at venues throughout downtown!
