A key action item in the Downtown Recovery Strategy is to energize downtown with exciting events that draw people here and give them a positive downtown experience. Together with the partner organizations working on downtown recovery, Downtown Winnipeg BIZ secured funds from the Department of Canadian Heritage to hold Culture Days events at six locations over the week of Oct. 1-8

The family-friendly events offered no-cost art, music, dancing, workshops, markets, and experiences.

State of Downtown event

Hosted by the Winnipeg Chamber of Commerce, Downtown Winnipeg BIZ and Exchange District BIZ, on Sept. 27, nearly 500 people attended the first State of Downtown event since 2016.

Angela Mathieson, President and CEO of CentreVenture Development Corporation and David Pensato, Executive Director of Exchange District BIZ gave an update on Winnipeg’s Downtown Recovery Strategy including funding secured so far, projects underway and what’s next.

Attendees also heard from keynote speaker, four-term Mayor of Oklahoma City, Mick Cornett who emphasized the importance of the urban core and its success, not just for those who live or work downtown, but for all Winnipeggers.

New art being installed at Portage and Main
Design

The artwork on the barricades is being replaced, bringing a new and refreshed large-scale mural to this important location. Selected by a committee, the new artwork by artist Jonato Dalayoan, is designed to celebrate our diverse community in downtown Winnipeg. We hope that one day this intersection will be open to pedestrians, but until that day comes, the artwork adds something pleasing and joyful to this highly visible intersection.

We expect installation to be completed in the coming weeks.
